Breakfast at Beach Grass Cafe is outstanding. The carmelized grapefruit is delicious and the maple bacon cheddar pancakes are definitely worth the calorie splurge. It gets pretty busy on the weekends so be ready for a wait. But they offer complimentary coffee to help ease the pain.
I was also recently there for lunch. I had high expectations as breakfast is always so delicious. However, I was sadly disappointed. While the fries were tasty, my lamb burger was a mess. The meat was grisly and the only flavor in the patty was char. My lunchmate enjoyed her salmon sandwhich though, so maybe just steer clear of the lamb and you'll be ok.

Went to Isabel's for lunch on Friday. It wasn't too busy, no wait, and we got a seat by the entrance (the front of the building is open). They serve breakfast until 3pm, so I opted for a dish with egg whites, marinated tofu, brown rice, sauteed veggies & salsa. It was delicious, filling and healthy. The marinated tofu was the standout piece of the dish. The service was spotty, really attentive at times and absent at others, but very friendly and helpful. Will definitely go back for lunch some time.

As much as I love ED for desserts, I have to give them props for their savory food today. Their grilled cheese (the gruyere is my favourite) and paninis(goat cheese & portabella today) are delicious. Sunday bunch there is pretty tasty too, but a bit spendy for the variety. Despited being stuffed i had to get a slice of something sweet. They didn't have my favorites today (blood orange ricotta and the chocolate croissant bread pudding), so i went with the chocolate tiramisu. Yumm. Lunch at ED was definitely the highlight to jury duty day.

K2O filled out a comment card for The Counter - Del Mar
Super stoked that there is a Counter in Del Mar (there's one in Leucadia too). The Counter is a build your own burger joint with a substantial array of options. The beef, turkey & veggie burgers are all delicious, and the garlic aioli is outstanding. The fried pickle chips are a great way to start the meal off. The sweet sauce is a nice compliment to the tang of the pickle. The new location was pretty busy during lunch, but definitely worth the trip. The only problem was that we were sitting outside and it was pretty breezy (and cold). There are heaters but the wind kept blowing the one by our table out. My lunchmate wanted a hot drink to stay warm with, but oddly they don't have any. Yep, no coffee or tea. Strange. Luckily Jimbo's is next door and has plenty of coffee. Despite the lack of toasty beverages, The Counter is getting shuffled into the regular lunch rotation.

I was really excited for dinner at R Gang Eatery. The menu looked amazing, and I had a hard time deciding what to get. We made it in time for happy hour and got a couple of cocktails. Mike had a ginger bread martini that he loved. I had a cucumber cooler that was pretty tasty, but a bit light on the gin. We opted to try out the lobster tater tots while waiting for the 3rd member of our party to arrive. Lobster tater tots? Sounds delicious. Turns out they were so so, they were on the bland side and had a kind of mushy consistency in the middle, but the Newburg sauce was tasty. For an entree I had the chai spiced scallops (again, bland), Mike had the shrimp and grits (shrimp was slightly overcooked and the grits were soupy) and Toni had the pork loin. The pork loin was by far the star of the evening, or rather the bacon brussel sprouts (really delicious) that came with the loin was the star of the evening.
The layout of the restaurant is roomy with a mixed style. The artwork is very deco modern while the tables and chairs are reminiscent of a truck stop diner. Maybe this is an attempt to appeal to the hipsters of Hillcrest. The staff was really friendly and the service was decent, but the bathroom had a seriously unpleasant funk. The meal wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. With so many other options out there to choose from I don't think I'll be back.

I took my mom to Prepkitchen (the one in Del Mar) for a belated birthday lunch. This was my first trip to the Del Mar location, and it was just as delicious as I had expected. I had the lunch combo that included a cup of soup, half sandwich, salad and house made chips. The soup of the day was celery root, and it was outstanding. For the sandwich, I had the smoked salmon panini with pickled persimmon, avocado & tarragon aioli. This sounded a bit odd, but peaked my curiousity. This too, was delicious. The pickled persimmon really complimented and lightened the salmon, and the bread was thin sliced and perfectly crisp. Mom tried the beet, tangerine & goat cheese salad. Also excellent. We finished the meal with the best carrot cake I've ever had. It was so good that we got a slice to go for a friend.
It was an excellent meal based on the food alone, but the service took it up a notch. Our waiter was super friendly and knowledgeable about the menu, and we chatted a bit about the La Jolla location. At the end of the meal, we got our check and noticed they didn't charge us for the second piece of cake. I pointed this out to our waiter, and he said it was on the house. When I asked why he said it was because they like to do something extra for their repeat customers and he had appreciated the positive feedback I had given them. It was really refreshing to hear this as often the only time you get something taken off the bill is when you complain. I should point out that I also used a Groupon coupon that day, so I know they weren't making much off our table. All in all, it was a great way to end the afternoon. We'll definitely be back there soon.
K2O filled out a comment card for Bluefin Fusion Japanese Restaurant
Went to Bluefin for lunch today (after having my curiosity peaked by Jeph). The space was well designed and it was easy to get a table. The menu looked really promising with lots of selection and cheap prices. I tried the 5 pc sushi bento for lunch. It was ok. The tempura was over battered and tasted like the oil wasn't the freshest. California rolls were good, the gyoza a bit over fired for my taste (but then again, I prefer them steamed or pan fried). The sushi was so-so. The shrimp was chewy, and some of the fish wasn't cut properly, but it was ok. About the same as what you get at Whole Foods.
Despite the lackluster experience, we'll go back to check out the happy hour. The drink specials look good and for 50% off the rolls might be ok.
Overall, Edamami in Del Mar is a better deal if you want good fish, but they don't have a full bar. (5pc sushi bento at Edamami is the same price as Bluefin and the fish is about 300 times better).

China Cafe is the best Chinese food off Convoy. Try the deluxe pan fried noodles Hong Kong style. The sesame chicken is also excellent. Parking there is tricky, there's only 5 spots, so if you see a spot on the street snag that up.
